Preparing Your Plants for Exhibition by Marlene RobertsIf you have a really nice plant that will be in full bloom during the show weekend, you may want to enter it for a potential award. When the judge looks at your plant, you want to make the best possible impression on them. To prepare your plant, follow these steps.
CHECK LIST:
•Remove all dead leaves, dried flower sheaths and dead plant material. Cut the tips off that have dried or turned brown. Remove any weeds such as oxalis, that grow in the plant medium. Put a covering of new medium on top if you think it will improve the appearance.
• Carefully inspect the plant for pests and if any are found remove them with alcohol and a Q-tip. If there is a bad infestation, do not bring the plant to the show. Clean the top of the leaves (vinegar, lemon juice, Sprite, 7-up, diluted milk,) to remove residue. Apply with cotton or soft paper towel.
• Carefully stake the inflorescence. This will help present the flowers to their fullest.
If you can plan ahead of time, it is best to train the inflorescence while it emerges and is soft. A mature inflorescence is hardened and can break easily.
•Remove any wire hangers hoops, etc, unless these are essential to the display of your plant.
•Water your plant thoroughly before bringing to the show.
• If the plant is in a plastic container, drop it into a clay or ceramic pot for stability.
You may want to add moss on top for a more decorative display. •Place plants in a large bowl or container for transport. To keep the plants from moving around, place crumpled newspaper around the pots.
